The Ford Broncos have been one of the most iconic cars in American sports history for almost 50 years, but the automaker is expected to unveil a big-ticket update to the vehicle next month.
Ford is expected on April 22 to unveil its next-generation Bronco, which has been a key pillar of the Ford Motor Company since the 1950s.
Ford CEO Mark Fields said in a speech on Monday that the Bronco would be “one of the best-selling cars of all time.”
Ford will announce a new model of the Broncos in 2019.
The Bronco will be a big addition to Ford’s lineup of sedans, pickup trucks and SUVs, which is a significant upgrade from its current lineup.
Ford’s Bronco is also one of only three vehicles that have been produced with a five-cylinder engine, along with the Lincoln Continental.
The Bronco’s five-liter engine produces 155 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, while the Lincoln’s four-liter is rated at 135 horsepower and 125 lb-f.
Ford has not said what size Bronco it will produce, but it will be the first model with a four-cylindered engine, which typically requires larger engine blocks.
Ford has said it plans to produce about 100,000 Broncos this year, with production ramping up to 400,000 in 2020.
Ford Bronco sales have been lackluster in recent years, and it is not clear if the new model will do much to boost sales.
A recent survey by auto analyst Kelley Blue Book found that just 12.5% of Bronco owners would purchase a new car in 2021.
